Siberian Tigers born in Murphy, NC at the King Kong Zoo

Baby_tigers_2_smaller

The King Kong Zoological Park here in Murphy, NC had two male Siberian Tigers born on Saturday morning at 3:42 a.m.. The mother is a Orange Tiger named Juliet and the father is a White Tiger named Romeo. The orange cub is a little larger than the rare all-white one.

Owner John Curtis took time out after giving a tour of the Zoo to some people visiting from Florida to tell me more about the tiger cubs. His father, Stan Curtis, showed me the photo albums of John throughout the years growing up around and with lions and tigers. The Curtis family moved here from Florida and in 1989 started the King Kong Zoo here in Murphy, NC. If you're here visiting the Zoo and have the opportunity to speak with John it's very evident that he has the knowledge and love for these wild animals that it takes to care for and run this Zoo. Our family has visited the Zoo many times and had great birthday parties there too.

I must say I was very fortunate and the first to have their photo taken with the cubs today. They were so cute and I was just thrilled that John allowed me to hold them. At just a week old they are hard to keep still just long enough for a picture. I'm so looking forward to visiting the King Kong Zoo and watching them grow.

John said that as they get a little bigger and their personalities start showing they will decide on about 5 names for tiger cubs and then the Cherokee County local schoolchildren will have the privilege of naming the cubs in a upcoming contest. We'll let you know what they choose in a later post.

Make sure to stop in and visit the King Kong Zoological Park in Murphy, NC!

Downtown Murphy, NC... no traffic jams here

No traffic jams here in downtown Murphy, NC! One thing we haven’t missed since 1997 is that 5:00 rush hour traffic in downtown Miami. Our buildings might not be as tall and we might not have all the name brand stores, but walking in downtown Murphy is one of the best things about living in Cherokee County, NC.

Park or walk downtown and you could spend all day there. One of our favorite places for breakfast is at Main Street where you can stop in or drive thru. We love their breakfast sandwich of whole wheat toast, eggs, cheese and a nice slice of tomato to get us going for a busy day showing real estate or browsing through the Classic Swan, Bless My Stitches, Rumors, Antiquities and the many other great restaurants and shops downtown.

After all that shopping you might just want to stop in Antica Roma Caffe for an espresso or some refreshing Gelato before heading down to the Murphy Library or the Cherokee County Historical Museum.

So no, after we finally made Murphy, NC our home we haven’t missed the wasted time spent in traffic and now spend time out in the gorgeous mountains hiking, sightseeing or out enjoying the lakes and rivers or just right here spending time in downtown Murphy, NC.

Murphy, NC Fire Safety in the Mountains!

Fire-prevention-sign-k-6003
With all the nice spring weather lately many people are cleaning up their yards and burning the leftover season’s debris. Before you get started, here are some safe burning tips. Even though we’ve had lots of rain in the Murphy, NC and surrounding western NC, north GA and east TN mountains - we still need to take precautions when burning. Here is the list of Cherokee and Clay County Permit Locations.

We also spoke to Steve Baumgartner, Cherokee County Deputy Fire Marshall and he shared these important tips for safe burning in our beautiful mountains…

* Make sure you have a valid permit.

* Check with local officials – outside burning may be prohibited.

* Check the weather – don’t burn on dry, windy days.

* Local fire officials can recommend a safe way for burning debris. Don’t pile it on the ground. It should be placed in a cleared area, away from overhead branches in a screened receptacle.

* Debris should not be accumulated for several days and then ignited. It becomes compacted and wet, increasing the air pollution and makes the fire burn longer, requiring more watching.

* Check your local laws on burning debris.

* Consider the alternatives to burning. Some types of debris – such as leaves, grass and stubble may be of more value if they are not burned, but used for mulching. Household trash should be hauled away to a recycling station and never burned.

* Be sure you are fully prepared before burning. To control the fire you will need a hose, bucket and a shovel for tossing dirt on the fire.
