Amazing Stick Art Maze at The Bascom...

Murphy, NC - Things to Do and See

While on our daytrip from Murphy, NC to neighboring Highlands, NC to see Dry Falls, we also stopped in The Bascom – A Center for the Visual Arts. As we entered through the covered bridge entrance we were greeted by this wonderful organic stick art maze created by sculptor Patrick Dougherty.

Come visit the King Kong Zoo in Murphy, NC!

Things to do in Murphy, NCYou won’t believe how much this small town zoo in Murphy, NC has to offer. We were recently at the King Kong Zoo for a birthday party for our niece and got to spend a little time talking with Owner/Operator, John Curtis. Curtis cares for 60 animals that live at the King Kong Zoological Park located at the intersection of Hwy 64 and US 19/129 next to the flea markets. Caring for the animals is second nature to Curtis as he grew up in the zoo industry. Together he and his father, Stanley, have 110 years of combined experience working with exotic animals. One of our favorite animals was the Zeedonk, a donkey-zebra hybrid, that John had to teach how to run from rain. Our favorite cat was the white tiger that playfully turned into a little kitten when John walked next to his cage. They also fed the pigmy goats, played video games and had pizza and cake!

Is Your Pet Sabotaging You from Selling Your Home?

Is Your Pet Sabotaging You from Selling Your Home? It’s just not realistic to think you can relocate your precious pets while you’re home is on the market, but here are some tips to stop sabotaging your showings. As you leave the house everyday or get ready for that showing appointment follow these tips…

Mountain Living Team - Murphy, NC

Keep cat litter boxes and puppy pads impeccably clean and out of sight

Keep all pet toys, kitty condos and feeding bowls picked up and put away

Make sure carpets and floors are cleaned of any stains

Mist the carpets and fabrics with Febreze, it freshens the air with a perfume smell. Air freshener sprays can affect people with allergies and just smell like you’re covering up something.

Put your pet in their carrier out in the garage or in an out of the way corner of a room. Better yet, load them up for a trip to the park.

Some people just aren’t pet lovers and others are fearful or distracted by animals. Doing these quick and easy steps could be the difference in having a great showing and getting an offer!

Murphy, NC daytrips to great waterfalls!

Mountain Living Team - Murphy, NCOne of the best things about living in Murphy, NC is all the great surrounding areas that make for some great daytrips. We just had one over to Highlands, NC just about an hour away from Cherokee County, NC.  Highlands is a beautiful area and they have one of the nicest downtown areas to park and stroll along all the unique shops and restaurants. But those are for another post about our daytrip.

We hadn’t been over to Dry Falls in about 10 years and it was about time we made the rounds of some of the best waterfalls in the NC Mountains again. They’ve just recently finished renovating the parking area and just a short walk down and you can walk behind the overhanging bluff where the 70-80' falls drop down into the Cullasaja River through the Nantahala National Forest. You’ll remain relatively dry when the water floMountain Living Team - Murphy, NCw is low, hence its name, but you’ll get wet if the water flow is high. Luckily for us it was just a light misting of water that day.

We are surrounded by so much lush greenery, towering hardwood trees, gorgeous flowing rivers, creeks and waterfalls here in Murphy, North Carolina and the surrounding areas. If you’d like to visit our area or need more information on the western NC, north GA or east TN Mountains and all they have to offer visit www.LeeAndCarol.com

The Ole Homestead in Murphy, NC

The Ole Homestead in Murphy, NC (edit/delete)

Lee & Carol Barbour - The Mountain Living Team

The Ole Homestead in Murphy, NC

Can’t you just imagine that this home place was a real grand one in its day? This large wood and tin home with a small creek running next to it is situated along Joe Brown Hwy in Murphy, NC and must be a family treasure.  It’s like a memorial to “the good ole days” every time we drive past it. You can just imagine all the kids out in the yard playing, mom hanging out laundry and the grandparents on the porch stringing half runner beans. These are some of the small town country scenes you can still find in Cherokee County.

Only Color Photos Taken of the effects of the Depression on America's Rural and Small Towns

Hope you have a little time today to click on this link for some amazing color photos of America from 1939-1943. A good friend shared this was us and the feeling you'll get viewing them will not be forgotten. These images, by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information, are some of the only color photographs taken of the effects of the Depression on America’s rural and small town populations. The photographs are the property of the Library of Congress and were included in a 2006 exhibit
